Notes from a dancer's journal, with occasional forays into parenting, cooking, knitting, writing, backpacking, books, and anything else that gets my body moving.
You're stuck inside Fahrenheit 451, which book do you want to be? Preferably one that isn't burned...
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Yes. Many times. Unlike Emma, I realize that crushes don't have to go anywhere to be fun.
The last book you bought is: I honestly don't know. No, wait, something about piglet and pooh, I think. I've been enjoying the library a lot lately. I bought a cooking magazine recently -- does that count? Cook's Illustrated. Good stuff.
The last book you read: The Beekeeper's Pupil, a novel. I mostly read novels. And message boards. And blogs. And video game text for other folks in the house. And my own grocery lists. The last non-novel I read was Playful Parenting, the one by Cohen, at Christmas time. I got a lot out of it, though I think I might've disliked it a year ago for not being TCS enough.
What are you currently reading? About to start reading Nobody's Fool, another novel.
Five books you would take to a deserted island:
I'll copy Gil, and Emma, and start with Extreme Survival Almanac: Everything You Need to Know to Live Through a Shipwreck, Plane Crash, or Any Outdoor Crisis Imaginable by Reid Kincaid.
Vogue Knitting, since I'm sure I'll have tons of yarn and my Addi Turbos with me.
Smart Medecine for a Healthier Child, though I won't have access to most of that stuff... Maybe I'd do some research and find a good herbal remedy book, Susun Weed or something.
Grimm's Fairy Tales, lots of fodder there.
A big book of games, I'd have to research that one too.
No novels, since I tend to read them once and move on. Now if I could bring my laptop w/a guaranteed internet connection, I'd skip all the books...
Who are you going to pass this stick to (3 persons)? And Why?
I'm not a stick passer either. But hey, Dan should do this, if he wants to. And Sierra. And Joelle. And Camille. And anyone else I know with a blog. Dawn 9:31 PM

I just deleted my links. I thought it would be nice to be link-free. Now this blog is just it's own entity... Drifting in space with no ties. Dawn 10:32 PM

I am so damn tired. Planning a surprise party is hard work. And I am so frigging close to DONE with the rainbow stripey sweater, but not quite there. Darnit. Dawn 1:33 AM
Weird. The link up there doesn't work, but cutting and pasting does... Huh? Dawn 1:20 PM

Courtney, this is for you...
Slings I have: an ellaroo wrap, a baby bundler wrap, two ring slings with fanned shoulders (one made out of an old sarong, the other a former maya wrap), a hotslings stretch cotton pouch with leg padding, and a homemade mei tai. We also have a baby bjorn (which I hate but Hans loves) and a frame backpack.
I think my collection is pretty good for a barebones collection.
I think if I lived in a place that got really cold, and if my baby were due at a coldish time of year, I'd want a perfectly sized fleece pouch. If I had bought my own stretchy wrap instead of extended-borrowing it, I might have gotten a cuddly wrap instead of a baby bundler. If I was rich, I'd definitely have a silk zolo and a didymos wrap -- and a kozy. I still might make myself a gauze wrap.
Nothing beats a wrap for hands-free capacity and versatility. They are, however, a bit overwhelming in the beginning just due to the volume of fabric. I think stretchy wraps are more forgiving -- with a woven wrap, you KNOW if it isn't adjusted right, with a stretchy you might not notice. I think this makes them great for learning with, and I think the stretch is cozy for tiny babies. My babies were never tiny... I like that woven wraps make it obvious if they aren't adjusted well, because then I am compelled to fix them right away, instead of realizing AFTER wearing a baby for a couple of hours that I could have done a better job getting the wrap nice and tight and well spread.
I think the maya wrap shoulder style sucks ass. I did not think this until I'd tried the fanned shoulder style. Courtney, I have plans for you... Don't go buying any ring slings unless you have to have a silk zolo and you can actually afford one.
I think that a pouch that does not fit is beyond useless. It is a frustrating piece of shit. Make sure any pouch you buy is sized correctly -- this might mean waiting until your belly is not enormous to buy the pouch.
Updated links. If your blog isn't there, I don't know it exists. Enlighten me. Dawn 6:25 PM

This blog is dead, isn't it?
Let's breathe a little life in... Just enough to keep ya remembering to check in on me once every coupla months.
That rainbow stripey sweater is getting closer. One sleeve down, one to go. And a hood and a zipper. Not so much... Maybe by Christmas? While it mostly sits in a canvas bag waiting for me to knit, I've been a sewing fanatic. I made myself a ring sling with a fanned shoulder, took apart my maya wrap and put it back together again with better rings and a fanned shoulder, and I made an ABC/mei tai style baby carrier. Oh yeah, and I slapped together a very cool ghost costume yesterday. Not bad.
How many of you are planning to get drunk (or otherwise mood altered) tomorrow night? C'mon, fess up. I would be scheduling myself a nice sloshy buzz if I breastfeeding weren't so important to me.
That's all for now. Don't forget to come back sometime. Maybe I'll have updated the links or finished the sweater and posted a pic... Wouldn't want to miss that, now would ya? Dawn 11:43 PM
